Peru

Where the impossible simply becomes real

Peru isn’t a destination you simply visit. It’s one you experience. From the mystical ruins high in the Andes to Lima’s vibrant culinary scene, from the sweeping Sacred Valley to salt pans that shimmer in the sunlight: this country moves you more deeply than you expect. At FAME Travel Designers, we craft your Peru journey down to the last detail. Tailored entirely to who you are and what you’re looking for.

Lima – The culinary capital of South America

Let Lima surprise you. It’s a city most travellers underestimate  and one that leaves almost everyone spellbound. The historic centre breathes history: stunning colonial architecture, hidden courtyards and the magnificent San Francisco church. But it’s the gastronomic scene that makes Lima truly one of a kind. Peru is one of the most celebrated culinary destinations in the world, and Lima is its beating heart.

✦ FAME Favourite
We reserve a table for you at Astrid y Gastón or Central; two of the best restaurants in the world and an absolute must for the discerning palate. Central is widely regarded as the finest restaurant in South America, with a tasting menu inspired by Peru’s own ecosystems. Quite simply outstanding.

Beyond the table, Lima reveals its more charming side in the Miraflores neighbourhood: coastal walks along the Pacific, beautiful parks and small galleries showcasing the best of Peruvian art.

The Sacred Valley – Where the earth holds you close

From Lima, we travel to Cusco and the legendary Sacred Valley of the Incas. A landscape that quite literally takes your breath away. Emerald-green mountain slopes, rivers winding through ancient terraces, and a silence you’ll rarely find anywhere else. This is Peru at its most authentic and most overwhelming.

✦ FAME Favourite
You explore the Sacred Valley on horseback. An experience of a completely different order to the classic tour. Ride through valleys, past Inca terraces and through villages where time seems to stand still. Something that stays with you long after you’re home.

Along the way you also discover Pisac, with its spectacular ruin complex that once served as agricultural centre, city and military stronghold all at once  and today one of the most photogenic spots in the country. A private picnic with views over the valley floor? FAME arranges it with pleasure.

The Salt Mines of Maras – A wonder of nature

More than 3,000 salt pools cascade down the hillside at Maras, fed by an underground spring that has been active for over 110 million years. The Incas were already harvesting this wonder centuries before the Spanish arrived, and local families still earn their living here today. The light at sunset on the white salt pans is nothing short of surreal.

✦ FAME Favourite
We organise your visit to Maras by quad bike; an adventure through the Andean landscape that brings you to this hidden wonder in a way ordinary tour groups never experience. Freedom, scenery and adrenaline, all in one.

Machu Picchu – An experience beyond words

There are places on earth that no photograph can capture. Machu Picchu is one of them. The mystical Inca citadel, hidden in the clouds at 2,430 metres altitude, was only revealed to the outside world in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham. Archaeologists believe it served as a sacred retreat for the Inca nobility and that aura of mystery has never left.

FAME ensures you arrive at the perfect moment: early in the morning, before the crowds, when the mist still drifts slowly above the temples and you can take in this wonder of the world in all its glory.

✦ FAME Favourite
The return to Cusco takes place aboard the Hiram Bingham by Belmond, the most elegant train in Peru, named after the very man who discovered Machu Picchu. Mahogany seats, crystal glasses, a multi-course menu and live musicians while the Andes glide past your window. A journey that stays with you just as long as the site itself.

Cusco – The heart of the Inca empire

Cusco is more than a city. For centuries it was the centre of one of the greatest civilisations the world has ever known, and you still feel that grandeur in every stone, every square, every church built on Inca foundations. Evenings in Cusco are something special: atmospheric restaurants, exceptional cocktail bars and a warmth in the streets that makes you forget you’re thousands of miles from home.

✦ FAME Favourite
Make your own Pisco Sour and prepare an authentic ceviche with the help of a local chef. An immersive experience that takes you straight to the soul of Peruvian cuisine and makes you look at every plate differently for the rest of the trip.

The Amazon: Where the jungle draws you in

Peru is more than the Andes and the Inca civilisation. A stay in the Peruvian Amazon adds an entirely different dimension to your journey. From Puerto Maldonado, gateway to the rainforest, you travel by boat along the Madre de Dios river towards one of the most remarkable ecosystems on earth. The Tambopata National Reserve covers 1.5 million hectares of pristine jungle and has been the backdrop to dozens of wildlife documentaries. Giant otters, macaws, sloths, caimans under a star-filled sky: the nature here is breathtaking in every sense.

✦ FAME Favourite
Our preferred base is the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción: an exceptional lodge built on a former cacao and rubber plantation, nestled between the rainforest and the river. Your cabin combines untouched nature with refined comfort. By day you glide by wooden canoe across the mirror-calm Lake Sandoval in search of caimans and giant otters, or walk the suspended bridges of the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, 38 metres high in the treetops. In the evening you dine à la carte as the jungle awakens around you. An experience that engages every single sense.

Lake Titicaca: Mirror of the sky

At 3,812 metres above sea level, on the border of Peru and Bolivia, lies the highest navigable lake in the world. Lake Titicaca is far more than a natural wonder, it is the cradle of the Inca civilisation, a place that has drawn people for centuries and never lets go. Its waters hold a shade of deep blue you won’t find anywhere else, the Andes rise up on the horizon, and the silence is of a kind that grows ever rarer. On the floating islands of the Uros, communities live as their ancestors did a thousand years ago, on rafts of woven reeds. A world entirely apart, barely an hour from Puno.

✦ FAME Favourite
We stay at the Titilaka Lodge, the only Relais & Châteaux hotel on Lake Titicaca, tucked away on a private peninsula shared with the local Aymara community.

Peru differently

Not every traveller wants the same route. Some are looking for something deeper. Something unexpected. One for those who find the silence of a moving train deeply restorative. One for those for whom Machu Picchu only truly means something after five days of sweat and mountain air. FAME offers two exceptional alternatives for those who want to discover Peru in an entirely different way.

The Andean Explorer: Peru by train

Imagine: eleven days, almost entirely by train. The Belmond Andean Explorer connects Cusco, Lake Titicaca and Arequipa in a multi-day rail journey that exists nowhere else on earth. Private cabins with panoramic windows. A dining car serving local specialities and Peruvian wines. An open observation platform from which you watch the Andes transform as evening falls. You don’t travel through Peru. You let Peru unfold before you. This is travel as an art form.

The Salkantay Trek: Machu Picchu on foot

For those who want to earn Machu Picchu, there’s the Salkantay Trek. Five days of hiking through one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes on earth. Over the Salkantay Pass at 4,600 metres, past glacial lakes, through cloud forests full of orchids and hummingbirds. And then, on the morning of the fifth day, the first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Not from a bus. Not surrounded by hundreds of tourists. But after five days of walking, breathing and going deeper. An arrival you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life. FAME accompanies the Salkantay Trek with small, private groups and quality lodges along the way. No compromises on comfort, even in the mountains.
