Vietnam

Authentic Asia with a touch of French elegance

Vietnam is a destination that surprises you, moves you, and never quite lets you go. From misty mountain valleys in the north to the lush delta in the south, from elegant imperial cities in the centre to buzzing metropolises at either end of the country: Vietnam is a land of contrasts that impresses at every level. The French colonial heritage has left a uniquely layered cultural palette. Visible in the architecture, the cuisine and the way people live. At FAME Travel Designers, we craft your Vietnam journey down to the last detail, tailored entirely to who you are and what you’re looking for.

Pu Luong – Vietnam as it once was

While most travellers head to Sapa for their mountain experience in northern Vietnam, FAME deliberately chooses Pu Luong. A valley every bit as spectacular, but without the crowds that have overrun Sapa in recent years. Here you find the true silence of the Vietnamese mountain landscape: endless rice terraces that turn golden during harvest season, small settlements of the Thai and Muong minorities where life still follows the same rhythms as centuries ago, and paths through bamboo forests that make you feel like the only visitor in the world.

The absence of mass tourism makes it possible to travel here in an authentic, respectful way  with guides who are part of the local community and accommodation that blends seamlessly into the landscape.

✦ FAME Favourite
We stay at the Pu Luong Eco Garden, an ecolodge perched on a hilltop with a view over the valley that quite literally takes your breath away. Your bamboo and wood bungalow has a private terrace where you wake up in the morning while mist still clings to the mountain peaks and the first light of day sets the rice fields aglow. No crowds, no noise. Just the kind of silence you never find in a city. This is Pu Luong as we mean it: authentic, peaceful, and beautiful in a way that stays with you.

Halong Bay – One of the most beautiful places on earth

There are destinations so iconic that they simply cannot be missed, popular or not. Halong Bay is one of them. The bay of more than 1,500 limestone islands and formations that rise mysteriously from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin is one of the most photographed landscapes in Asia  and not without reason. At dawn, when the mist hangs between the rocks and the water mirrors the sky, Halong Bay is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The challenge isn’t the destination itself, but how you experience it. Most cruises on Halong Bay are mass tourism at its most extreme: large ships, hundreds of passengers, fixed itineraries. FAME chooses something radically different.

✦ FAME Favourite
We book exclusively on small boutique vessels with a handful of cabins at most, taking you to the lesser-visited corners of the bay. Kayaking between the rocks at first light, swimming in hidden lagoons, candlelit dinner on the aft deck as the stars reflect in the water. Halong Bay the way it was meant to be experienced.

Hanoi – A city that never leaves you

Hanoi is a city of layers. Beneath the surface of the modern metropolis lies one of the most fascinating cities in Southeast Asia: a labyrinth of ancient streets in the Old Quarter, each named after the craft practised there for centuries, French colonial boulevards lined with plane trees and Art Deco facades, lakes that sit like mirrors at the heart of the urban fabric, and a food culture that draws travellers from across the world. Hanoi is raw, charming, chaotic and unmistakably itself.

The city deserves more than a fleeting visit to its tourist highlights. To truly understand Hanoi, you have to move through it: down narrow alleyways, past local markets, beyond the schools and temples that hide behind the busy main streets.

✦ FAME Favourite
We organise a private tour by authentic Vietnamese army jeep through the hidden backstreets of Hanoi. You wind through labyrinths of lanes that no guidebook mentions, past the places where locals eat, work and live. The tour ends with a selection of classic Hanoian dishes, including the iconic egg coffee, the creamy coffee speciality that exists nowhere else. An experience that reveals Hanoi in an entirely different light.

Ninh Binh – Halong Bay on land

Ninh Binh is sometimes called the ‘Halong Bay on land’  and anyone who has been there immediately understands why. The same imposing limestone formations that rise from the water at Halong Bay emerge here from vast rice fields and winding rivers. The landscape is of an almost surreal beauty: pagodas centuries old, caves sacred to Buddhist tradition, and stretches where silent nature takes over completely.

Ninh Binh lies just two hours from Hanoi and makes a perfect stop on the way south. The region is also historically remarkable: this is where Vietnam’s first capital once stood, long before Hanoi took on that role.

✦ FAME Favourite
We explore Ninh Binh by bicycle. The most fitting pace for this landscape. Along narrow dyke paths through the rice fields, beside the banks of the Ngo Dong river, through small villages where the farming calendar still governs daily life. A journey that takes you deeper into the real Vietnam than any tourist circuit ever could.

Hue – The imperial city

Hue was for centuries the political, cultural and spiritual heart of Vietnam as the seat of the Nguyen dynasty, the country’s last imperial family. The city breathes that history at every turn: the imposing Imperial Citadel, modelled on its Chinese counterpart; the series of royal mausoleums scattered along the Perfume River; the pagodas seeking their reflection in the water. Hue is a city of serene beauty and remarkable historical depth and one of the most underestimated destinations in Vietnam.

The cuisine of Hue is the most refined in all of Vietnam and rightly earns its reputation as the country’s culinary capital. A legacy of the imperial court kitchen, designed to refine the senses rather than simply satisfy them. Small dishes, complex flavours, an aesthetic that extends to the plate itself.

✦ FAME Favourite
We arrange a private cooking class for you with a local cook in Hue, where you learn the secrets of imperial cuisine: from preparing authentic banh beo and banh khoai to discovering the subtle balance of herbs and spices that makes the food of Hue so unique. You leave with more than memories, you leave with recipes you can bring back to life at home.

Hoi An – Romance at the heart of Vietnam

Hoi An may well be the most beautiful city in Vietnam. The Ancient Town, now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a remarkably well-preserved trading port from the 15th and 16th centuries, when Hoi An was one of the most important harbours in Southeast Asia. Japanese, Chinese and European influences have created an architectural palette that exists nowhere else: yellow facades, wooden balconies, red lanterns that bathe the streets in warm light each evening. At night, when the lanterns glow and the bustle of the day has faded, Hoi An transforms into one of the most romantic places on the continent.

Hoi An is the destination for those who want to slow down. The city invites you to walk, to wander, to taste and to savour. The beaches of An Bang and Cua Dai are just ten minutes by bicycle, the rice fields of the surrounding countryside equally close. Hoi An is a city you won’t want to leave.

✦ FAME Favourite
Hoi An celebrates the 14e th day of every lunar month with the Lantern Full Moon Festival, when hundreds of paper lanterns are set afloat on the Thu Bon river and the city is bathed in magical light. FAME ensures you’re there at exactly the right moment. On a private boat on the river, watching a sea of drifting lights glow around you. One of the most romantic experiences Vietnam has to offer.

Ho Chi Minh City – Saigon, the city that never sleeps

Ho Chi Minh City, which its residents simply continue to call Saigon,  is a city in full motion. The former capital of South Vietnam pulses with energy, ambition and modernity, yet beneath the gleaming surface of skyscrapers and neon lights it has preserved the warm, chaotic charm that has made it so special for decades. The French quarter around Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office shows the colonial heritage at its finest. The markets of Cho Ben Thanh and the narrow streets of Districts 1 and 3 reveal daily life in all its colourful diversity.

Saigon is also a paradise for food lovers. The city serves up Vietnam at its most expansive: from refined Vietnamese fine dining to the best pho and banh mi you’ve ever tasted, served simply from a street-side stall.

✦ FAME Favourite
We organise a culinary Vespa tour through Saigon after dark. Aboard a vintage Vespa, you follow your guide through the city lights, from street food stall to hidden restaurant, from the historic centre to the lively local neighbourhoods that most tourists never reach. An evening you experience with every single sense.

The Mekong Delta – Where Vietnam holds its breath

Barely two hours from the noise of Saigon, a world begins that is almost impossible to describe. The Mekong Delta, the fertile lowlands where the Mekong splits into dozens of tributaries before flowing into the South China Sea, is the richest and greenest part of Vietnam. A mosaic of small islands, canals, floating markets and orchards so lush they seem almost unreal. Life here unfolds largely on the water: boats laden with exotic fruits, markets held on the river at dawn, bamboo bridges connecting island to island.

The Mekong Delta isn’t a spectacular destination in the conventional sense. It asks for slowness, for attention, for a willingness to let yourself be carried along by the rhythm of the water. And those who accept that invitation come away with one of the most authentic and moving experiences Vietnam has to offer.

✦ FAME Favourite
FAME arranges your Mekong visit with a private boat and a local guide who takes you to the floating markets of Cai Rang at dawn, along the orchards of the small islands and through the canal systems that only the locals know. A full-day programme built around you, far from the organised group excursions.
