Tanzania

Where Africa touches you at its deepest core

Tanzania is a destination that has stirred imagination and longing for centuries, and one that always delivers on its promises. From the peaks of the highest mountain in Africa to the endless plains of the Serengeti, from the primordial nature of Ngorongoro to the white beaches and azure waters of Zanzibar: this is a country that speaks to all the senses at once. Tanzania is also a land of contrasts: the raw, untamed savannah opposite the elegant coast, the cold mountain air of Kilimanjaro opposite the tropical warmth of the island. We at FAME Travel Designers design your Tanzania experience down to the smallest detail, tailored precisely to who you are and what you seek.

Kilimanjaro — Climbing the roof of Africa

At 5,895 metres above sea level, Kilimanjaro rises as a solitary giant above the Tanzanian plains: the highest mountain in Africa. What makes Kilimanjaro so extraordinary is that it is technically accessible without climbing equipment or experience, yet it is mentally and physically one of the most demanding experiences that nature has to offer. The ascent leads you over five to seven days through five climate zones: from tropical rainforest full of monkeys and hummingbirds, through moorland landscapes and even desert-like plains, to the icy, barren glacial world of the summit. Every day is literally a different planet.

The final night is of an intensity that is difficult to describe. At midnight you set off for the summit push, step by step, in freezing cold and thin air, with the starry sky as your only light. And then, at sunrise, you reach the crater rim of Uhuru Peak. The light breaks through, the shadow of the mountain reaches to the horizon, and there is only silence. It is a moment that those who have experienced it carry with them for the rest of their lives.

✦ FAME Favourite
FAME exclusively chooses the Lemosho Route, the most beautiful and varied path to the summit, with the best acclimatisation and the lowest risk of altitude sickness. We work with a close-knit team of certified guides and porters who know the mountain inside out, and your safety and comfort are always guaranteed. Your tent is the quietest spot on the mountain each evening. Certainly comfortable, but also ‘pretty basic’. Yet nothing is lacking, with warm meals prepared by your own cook, and a starry sky you have never seen before at that altitude. We don’t just guide you to the top. We make sure you enjoy every step along the way.

Preparation for a Kilimanjaro climb is crucial, and FAME guides you from the very start. From a personal training plan to the right equipment, from medical preparation to logistics on the mountain: everything is taken care of in the smallest detail, so you can fully focus on the park and the climb.

We have climbed the mountain ourselves, so we can genuinely call ourselves experts.

The Serengeti & Ngorongoro — Nature’s grand stage

After the ascent of Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti offers a completely different but equally overwhelming experience. The endless rolling plains of the Serengeti, the largest savannah reserve in the world, are the stage for the greatest animal migration on earth. More than two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles move in an eternal circle in search of fresh grass and water, pursued by lions, cheetahs and crocodiles. It is an ancient spectacle that unfolds anew every year and that evokes an almost religious awe in every visitor.

✦ FAME Favourite
A private game drive at sunrise with your own guide and ranger, a hot-air balloon above the plain in the first morning light with a glass of bubbles upon landing, a sundowner with elephants in the distance: this is the safari as it was meant to be. Intimate, quiet and completely tailored to you. The Serengeti Explorer offers a fantastic stay in the Serengeti, with an infinity pool overlooking the plain where you can enjoy a wonderful BOMA dinner with your feet in the sand and traditional singing.

The Ngorongoro Crater, a short drive from the Serengeti, is a world unto itself. The largest intact caldera in the world shelters an impressive concentration of wildlife within its protective walls: lions, rhinos, elephants, hippos and flamingos live there in a rare harmony. The descent into the crater at the break of day is an experience that no other park in the world can match.

✦ FAME Favourite
Accommodation is available outside the crater or right on the rim. Our favourite is the magnificent Meliá Collection lodge perched on the edge, offering a breathtaking view over the entire crater. At night, an elephant may stroll past your room, and you can watch the rangers in their jeeps guarding the rhinos and elephants in the crater. This place still gives us goosebumps.

Zanzibar — The island where the journey comes to rest

After the physical and emotional intensity of Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, Zanzibar offers exactly what your body and mind deserve: absolute beauty, absolute calm. The Spice Island, as it is historically known, is a world of lukewarm ocean, coral reefs of extraordinary richness, and a Stone Town that bears the traces of Arab, Persian, Portuguese and British influences. The scent of cloves and cinnamon hangs in the air, the alleyways of the medina wind past carved doors and crumbling palaces, and the water off the coast has a colour that drives photographers to despair.

✦ FAME Favourite
We stay on the northern and eastern part of the island, in small boutique resorts and private villas on the most beautiful stretches of beach on Zanzibar. A private snorkelling trip to the coral reefs of Mnemba Atoll, a spice tour through the herb plantations in the heart of the island, a candlelit dinner on the beach with fresh fish and seafood caught by local fishermen: Zanzibar pampers you in a way that is completely different from everything you have experienced before. This is the island where the journey comes to rest, and where you realise just how unforgettable the preceding weeks were.

Stone Town, the UNESCO-protected historic centre of Zanzibar City, is a labyrinth you can explore for days. Arab merchants, Persian bathhouses, the Forodhani market where local street food is prepared at the waterfront in the evenings, and the rooftop bar with a view over the Indian Ocean: Stone Town is a city you want to understand, and one that surprises you time and again.

Mafia Island – Where the Ocean Belongs to No One

To truly understand Tanzania, make your way to Mafia Island. No mass tourism, no crowded beaches—just an island that has deliberately stayed out of the spotlight, and that is exactly what makes it so special. Here lies one of the world’s most stunning coral reefs, protected as a marine park, pristine and astonishingly vibrant. Whale sharks, turtles, napoleonfish: the Indian Ocean shows its most generous face to those willing to make the journey.

On land, the pace is slow and deliberate. Fishermen set out at dawn in their wooden ngalawas, mangroves paint the coastline in deep shades of green, and the lodges—small and discreet—let nature take the lead. Mafia is not a destination for those seeking distraction. It is a destination for those longing for true silence.

✦ FAME Favourite
Between October and February, whale sharks glide through the shallow waters around Mafia, one of the few places in the world where you can witness this phenomenon responsibly and intimately. FAME combines Mafia Island with Zanzibar, or as an exclusive finale after a safari: two entirely different islands, one unforgettable Tanzania.
